Differential Repair
Differential Repair Description
A differential is a key component to any wheeled vehicle. It is the component which takes the power generated from the engine and transfers it to the drive wheels. It takes into consideration the fluctuations of wheel speed as the vehicles adjusts speed and passes through turns. As a vehicle moves through a turn, the inner wheel will turn at a slower rate than the outer wheel does. The differential is what lets the wheels to move in different rotation sleeps while keeping the vehicle under control. If a vehicle does not have a differential, it would be unstable through every turn The vehicle would bump and hop along the pavement making it difficult to control. Vehicles with four-wheel drive have two differentials, one for the front and one for the back. Vehicles with rear-wheel drive have a single differential for the rear wheels. Front-wheel drive vehicles use transaxles which couple the transmission and axle together, connecting the front tires. All-wheel drive cars also have two differentials with a transfer case which allows for wheel speed adjustment during operation.
Differential Repair Benefits
No matter whether your vehicle has front-wheel drive, four-wheel drive, or rear-wheel drive, every vehicle suffers from wear. This wear and tear will vary from vehicle to vehicle and dependent up on various factors. When having differential repairs, it is important to consider the environment in which your vehicle operates and the type of terrain. Obviously, paved roads require less work than uneven terrain and unpaved roadways. The harsher the environment and the more extreme the driving, the greater the impact on the differential.
Differential maintenance can include cleaning and lubrication. When the differential has insufficient lubrication, it can wear more quickly and ultimately fail, generating loud noises. If you have noticed an increase in noise, it might be a sign the differential needs maintenance. Reach out to us today to find out more.
